eSIMs are the new virtual SIM card replacements for traditional SIM cards inside mobile devices.

But can they be used simultaneously – at the same time?

Or is it all or nothing, with no option but to commit fully to each?

Let’s find out…

Is it possible to use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes, absolutely!

Devices with compatibility for both eSIM cards and physical SIM cards can use both simultaneously, at the same time on a single device.

Furthermore, there are potential benefits to doing so as well.

For example, you may wish to run calls and text messages through the provider that offers the physical SIM and use the eSIM for mobile data.

This ease of transition between SIM and eSIM allows individuals like you to get the best rates, with ultimate flexibility.

Choosing which network to route calls, SMS, and data through – at any given time.

How to Switch between a physical SIM and an eSIM on a mobile phone

Once you’ve gone through the steps and activated the eSIM on your mobile phone, here’s how to switch between physical SIM and eSIM with minimum fuss.

Switching between SIM and eSIM on Android

Android devices let you select which SIM to use for each service: Calls, SMS and Data.

To begin, you must first switch both SIM and eSIM to ON within the Settings.

Then, head to Settings > Connections > SIM card Manager

Turn on the physical SIM card option, and toggle on the eSIM profile you want to use.

For each service: Calls, SMS, Data – select the preferred SIM or eSIM profile

Switching between SIM and eSIM on iPhone

Iphones offer a very granular approach to switching between SIMs on their devices, giving you ultimate control at multiple levels.

Once you’ve completed the activation process for your eSIM, here’s how to get dual SIM functionality set up.

CARRIER LABELS

Once you’ve activated your eSIM head to Settings > Cellular and give your different carriers a label – something to differentiate the two.

SET YOUR DEFAULT NUMBER

Now that you have two separate SIMs running on one device, you’ll also have two different numbers.

To set a default number for your device go to Settings > Cellular > Default Voice Line – and select your preferred default number.

SET UP CELLULAR DATA

To select a preferred data network go to Settings > Mobile Data > Cellular Data > Allow Cellular Data Switching.

This will allow you to choose the data network you want to use on your device.

CONCLUSION

Virtual SIM card technology allows you to use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time on the same device, letting you keep your number – and all the good things you love about your current network provider – whilst cherry picking additional services at better rates.

A win-win for consumers.
